Christmas is coming!

I've been sick the past few days (booooo!) but on Saturday I finally felt well enough to get out of the apartment.  We had basketball practice in the afternoon followed by a team dinner at my assistant coach's apartment.  It was such a great time...I really enjoyed spending time with these girls outside of school and practice. Here are some pics of the night:

The lighting is really weird on this one, but the girls thought it made us look "angelic" or something.
These are the freshmen girls with Coach Currier (JV Coach) on the far left.

Tom and I in a classic Christmas pose...in our sweats!
We introduced the girls to the wonderful game of Mafia!!!  Tom and I co-narrated the game.  The girls really enjoyed it.  By the way, this is the game that was played the very first time I met Tom.  Tom lost in the game and got REALLY MAD (probably the most angry I've ever seen him to this day).  Let's just say that seeing him this upset was a turn-off.  I told a friend after that night, "I wouldn't want to marry a man with a temper like Tom Meyer."   Luckily I got to know Tom more and realized he's not an angry, temperamental man.  It was an isolated incident in the midst of competition.  But a funny memory, none the less.
After dinner we headed back to our apartment to decorate for Christmas.  We put up our tree that we bought last year, which claims to be six feet tall.  However, if you look closely the top twig of the tree is probably a foot by itself (and looks ridiculous).  We ended up bending that top twig over so the tree doesn't look so gangly.
 Ta-Da!

We also put on display the nutcracker my brother bought me this summer from Germany.

We go fairly light on the decoration since we don't actually spend Christmas here, but we had to put a little Christmas cheer around the apartment.  Only 27 days until Christmas and only 20 days until we fly home!!!  We're so excited!

basketball banquet

This past week we had the girls basketball team over to our apartment for our end of the season basketball banquet. It was so fun to have the girls over! We made them mexican food and one of the girls said it was the first time she had ever had mexican food in her life! Incredible! She liked it too!
Rosanne (the assistant coach) and I got the girls championship tshirts. The girls liked them. Check it out:

Now that we hosted the banquet, the season is officially over. It was such a great experience. These girls are great.

Coach of the year

So those of you that use Facebook and Twitter may already know this. One of the awards that they give out at our conference basketball tournament is Coach of the Year. This year the winner for the girls was none other than Bonnie Meyer. I know Bonnie was excited to win the award and I was really excited for her. She worked her tail off coaching the girls this year. I remember when the season started we were seriously worried that they would finish in 6th or 7th place (out of 7 teams). The fact that they won the whole tournament is truly amazing and awesome to me.

Here is Coach Meyer with her award:

victory

We had our first basketball games today. Both teams won!

The girls won 20-12 and the boys won 47-27.

It was a great night and a good start to the season. The girls actually were down at half time 12-8, and we came back to win it. And if you check out the final score you'll notice that the other team did not score the entire second half! I am so proud of the girls and I'm really enjoying coaching.

The boys also did a great job. The guys came out with an early lead, having an 18-0 run at the beginning of the game. At half time the score was 30-9. All of the boys got a lot of playing time and the team looked strong. (Good job Coach Currey--former boy's coach--of laying a solid foundation last year.)

We have two more games tomorrow that should prove to be more intense competition. We'll let you know how they go and we'll try to post some pictures.
